NYC mayor considering virtual learning plan for schools

New York City Mayor Eric Adams is considering allowing the largest school district in the country to return to some form of virtual schooling as the omicron variant leads a wave of coronavirus cases.

Attendance levels have been lower than usual, with district-wide attendance sitting at around 76%, accoridng to numbers from the city Department of Education. That means nearly 220,000 students missed school.

More than 100 schools had an attendance of less than 60%, and more than half that number had less than 50% attending class Wednesday.

Similar trends have been observed in other school districts, though other large cities in the Northeast have had varying stances on remote learning. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu on Thursday said that the “peak may be past us soon” when asked about the wave of cases in the district.
